Bill Mollison and his former student and co-founder David Holmgren were the first to coin the term 'Permaculture'.
Permaculture is the integrated and intelligent design of living systems for humans that work in harmony with nature and the surrounding environment. That environment isn't just trees and rocks, it is a whole system including social, cultural, political factors and how they interact with built, changing and predictable elements that are already a part of or introduced to the system.
The concept of 'design' in permaculture, is an interaction with space, time and culture that is constantly evolving.

4 principles for the design stage...
In the initial stages of a design these principles (4 of 12) are the most referred to in our process.
Observe & interact
In observing nature it is important to take different perspectives to help understand what is going on with the various elements in the system. |
Catch & store energy
Identifying opportunities and developing integrated systems to catch water, sunlight, wind and waste to harness energy. |
Obtain a yield
Often misinterpreted as Lettuce and Lemons, this principle encourages sustainable harvest of food, social, financial and cultural energy. |
Self-regulation & feedback loops
This principle is essentially dropping your ego... Looking for constant feedback from a system and learning from mistakes. |
