The Bounty - Manyana, NSW
When a client comes to you with a completely blank slate and a great attitude, you try to stay calm... It's exciting.
After selling up in Sydney and moving to the area to build a fit-for-purpose, beautifully constructed home suitable for a healthy coastal retirement, these clients wanted to surround the home with a productive garden, so they called us. We were thrilled to be handed creative control and have designed what we believe is a leading example of permaculture landscaping. The home is in a high risk area for bushfires, so we designed around this keeping vulnerable areas of the home clear and accessible while planting low-oil native plants to assist with fire mitigation. We've planted native and conventional fruit and nut species, installed a second outdoor bathroom that waters productive areas everytime someone showers of enjoys the vintage (upcycled) cast iron bath in the open air, local blackbutt timber outdoor bathroom. This garden isn't mucking around! It features a citrus, fruit and nut orchard with cpmpanion planting, 50m2 of permaculture guild zone based on syntropic principles and 18m2 of seasonal vegetable and herb beds again made from local, sustainable forestry Blackbutt timbers. We've been working with this client for around 6 months all up and have turned their empty, weedy block into a world class example of a productive suburban garden with high quality landscaping finishes throughout. This project has been a HUGE effort but the stunning results make it all so worthwhile, seeing the clients start to get out in the garden and get more and more involved each day is pure joy! |
Use edges & value the marginalThis otherwise neglected space was the perfect protected spot for a couple of beds to grow fresh herbs and leaves for the cafe.

Just Add CoffeeUsing compost, food waste and coffee grounds we filled the beds and mulched the ground down. This included educating the staff about composting.
