Neptune St, Manyana, NSW

The challenge with this ongoing design is manipulating the site to completely optimise the energy flow of 3 generations of a family. Starting from the garden spaces and working into the practical usage scenarios. Work will continue on this site for some time as we play, observe and build together with this busy and enthusiastic family.

This design includes:
- A sub-tropical native food forest hugelkultur system that doubles as a 'zen zone' where occupants can shower outside amongst the ferns.
- Numerous areas of native planting specifically designed to provide food, medicine and aesthetic gain.
- A living fence to replace the existing wire barrier around the property boundary with endemic stone and reclaimed timber. This system will provide food, habitat and create a curated energy flow in and out of the property. In addition the living fence will create moments of interaction with passers by who can meet and share growing fruits, conversation and energy with the occupants.

The blueprint

This relatively 'standard' coastal home site is a perfect example of permaculture working in urban areas. This design began in December 2021 and will continue in our typical staged process. This allows for observation of the changed and introduced elements.

Hugelkultur

Using the tried and tested method of Hugelkultur we have created a fast tracked rainforest system using locally sourced decomposing timber and the former lawn as vertical structure. This method lets us build vertically much more than other mound styles.

From ridge to valley

Using the shade of the fruiting Lilly Pilly (Syzygium) and Ficus Coronata (Sandpaper Fig) we created a temperate to sub-tropical or temperate rainforest system. We couldn't find any examples of hugelkultur being used to create a native food forest, so we built one.

It's all settled in nicely (6-12 months)
