Curbside café commune

One of our first and still favourite consults in Cunjurong Point, NSW.

Cunjurong Café - Cunjurong Point, NSW

This is a very good example of the 'Observe and interact' principle of permaculture. A cafe and deli is a busy place, put this business in a small community on a normal residential street and you get a complex set of social, cultural and of course environmental considerations. From food waste to people flow and energy exchange between customers and the neighbouring residents, we have to think of everything in this slow and steady design.

We haven't worked with this client for over 2 years... Which is awesome because they haven't needed our help! With a little nudge they've implemented:
- Food and coffee waste capture and repurposing
- Established a herb, medicinal and culinary flower and salad garden
- Added diversity to flora species and build soil
- Observed extreme rainfall and planned drainage remediation
- Created a for local makers andproducers to sell goods.

Absolutely stoked to see this client take the ideas and own them! YAY!

Use edges & value the marginal

This otherwise neglected space was the perfect protected spot for a couple of beds to grow fresh herbs and leaves for the cafe.

Just Add Coffee

Using compost, food waste and coffee grounds we filled the beds and mulched the ground down. This included educating the staff about composting.

Designing from pattern to detail

We have helped the client with council submissions to allow for verge usage and street scape interactions. Zoning out usage areas (custom zoning) and testing scenarios.
